The Central Fabrication Facility is seeking an experienced process engineer to work in the Compound Semiconductor/Nanosystems Fabrication laboratory. This laboratory fabricates VCSLs and other types of semiconductor lasers, LEDs for communications, and THz devices. It also serves the needs of internal and external research groups, and is contracted to ESA on several sub-millimetre wave and terahertz research activities.

The successful candidate will be principally responsible for an ICP plasma etcher running etch processes on a variety of IIIV compounds, dielectrics and polymers, and for developing new etch processes to satisfy the needs of internal and external research groups. The engineer will also be expected to run plasma and e-beam evaporation deposition processes as necessary, and to develop capability with lithographic and general IIV processing.

Consultation with the customer, whether this be an internal research group or external agency, is considered a vital part of this position as it is important to provide or develop a process that fulfils the customer’s needs. To maximise the effectiveness of process engineers they must continue to develop their knowledge and expertise by keeping up to date with technology developments in their area – this is usually done through study of commercial publications and scientific journals. The process engineer will be encouraged to publish any new work that they may develop in journals or at conferences. The successful candidate should have good communication skills both for presenting and for reporting their work.

The ideal candidate will

  • Have 2-3 years experience of working in a semiconductor fabrication area
  • Have a degree (or MSc/PhD) r relevant qualification in a related discipline
  • Be a good team player
  • Be self motivated
  • Have the ability to disseminate research material effectively
  • Have excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills
