The Institute for Terahertz Science and Technology (ITST) at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB) is the home of the UCSB Free-Electron Laser (FEL). The UCSB FEL is the world’s brightest source of electromagnetic radiation that is broadly tunable over under-served terahertz portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. The UCSB FEL is used by investigators from UCSB and all over the world to study a wide range of scientific and technical questions. The UCSB FEL is powered by a six-million volt electrostatic accelerator. The accelerator is also used in nuclear physics applications.

We seek a broadly talented technician to operate, maintain, and improve the accelerator and FEL. The successful applicant will be supervised and trained in all aspects of the job.

The duties of the successful applicant will include

  • Accelerator/FEL improvement
  • Accelerator/FEL maintenance
  • Operating the FEL for users.
  • Laboratory management

The most important qualifications for this job are demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and fix electronic and mechanical problems in simple and complex hardware. Familiarity with electronics and the use of electronic test equipment are required. Any experience in mechanical design and construction, high voltage electronics, optics or vacuum systems will be helpful.

The applicant will be hired on a full-time (40-hour/week) basis, with flexible hours. Salary will be
dependent on prior work experience.
