Engineering school awarded $1.2 million grant for new center

Monday, May 16th, 2005

The University of Memphis Herff College of Engineering has received a $1.2 million federal grant to establish a Center for Advanced Sensors. The Center also will be working with terahertz concepts, a technology similar to radar. Many common materials and living tissues are semi-transparent and have terahertz “fingerprints,” allowing them to be imaged, identified, and analyzed.

Metal diode enables terahertz transceiver

Monday, May 16th, 2005

A new diode concept being developed at Phiar Corp. promises to enable terahertz detectors that could easily be integrated into silicon circuits, according to the company’s CEO and founder. Garrett Moddel described the technology at the recent Spring Meeting of the Materials Research Society in San Francisco.

Two technologies unite for terahertz scanning

Thursday, May 12th, 2005

Subterahertz waves-in particular, those between about 0.1 and 1 THz-penetrate many common optical materials while maintaining a short-enough wavelength that the ability to resolve commonplace items is not lost. Applications range from airport screening to finding defects in the type of foam heat-shield insulation used on the Space Shuttle.
